We are introducing one new workshops and continuing two previous workshops.

Also, we are sponsoring our second Build IT Raspberry Pi Student Challenge where student teams will demonstrate an application they built using the Raspberry Pi and peripherals. Target date is April 22, 2017 at Illinois Tech. Please visit our student competition page for more details as they become available.

    Professional development details:

We are scheduling one additional Professional Development Workshop for 2016-2017 school year.

    Raspberry Pi Workshop (Full Day)

    • This will be free of charge for the teacher attendee, but an application survey must be submitted.
    • Our target goal is 15 teacher attendees throughout Illinois.
    • We will arrange for these PD sessions to qualify for PD hours.
    • Teachers do not have to be technology teachers to attend this PD; and 2-3 teachers from a school are encouraged to attend together for mutual support after training.
    • Each full day Raspberry Pi session will include:
      • Overview/intro to the device, O/S and other software
      • Hands-on exercises:
        • Creation of a web server / easy web site
        • Use of a camera and/or sensor
        • Development of a python program – no experience needed
        • Brainstorming and design activities
    • The PD session will have at most a 1:10 instructor: attendee ratio, including a teacher assistant in some cases to ensure that level so attendees are well-supported. Attendance will normally be capped at 15.
      • One Raspberry Pi device (starter kit) will be provided to each attendee to use in class and keep for further use. A camera peripheral will be included in class, but not provided as take-home items.
    • Teacher attendees should bring a laptop if possible so they can download the appropriate software, etc.
    • We will monitor and report on results of the training through pre- and post-surveys, and solicitation of postings of classroom/after school/science fair projects using the raspberry pi to the IL IT LEx website.

    Computer Networking Support Workshop

The PD sessions will be based on the top ten tasks that students should be able to demonstrate after completing a hardware/computer support (A+ prep) class. The sessions will be designed so that they are highly interactive and provide teachers with ideas to make their classes more engaging. Examples of the tasks covered in the sessions will include testing and replacing power supplies and memory. We will include both hardware and software tasks.

Raspberry Pi Middle School Science Workshop

    • We will arrange for these PD sessions to qualifyfor CE credits
    • 2 teachers from a school are encouraged to attend together for mutual support after training.
    • Each half day session will include:
      • Overview/intro to the device, O/S and other software
      • Hands-on exercises:
        • Creation of a web server / easy web site
        • Use of a temperature sensor
        • Development of a python program – no experience needed
        • Posting data to Thingspeak
        • Brainstorming and design activities
    • Attendance will be capped at 12.
      • One Raspberry Pi starter kit will be provided to each attendee to use in class and keep for further use.

We will monitor and report on results of the training through pre- and post surveys. Teachers are also encouraged to make use of the Element14 STEM Academy to create and maintain a blog with comments and images of their implementations of projects using the Pi in their classrooms and/or after school clubs. Helpful information can be found on the IL IT Learning Exchange website.
